15 Problems During Infancy & Pregnancy For Vegans
Up to this point in my Nutrition Series, I’ve discussed the many nutrient deficiencies that are associated with a vegan diet (Proteins, Fats, Vitamins, Minerals). However, the time when these deficiencies are most severe is during pregnancy, lactation, and infancy. These stages of development and growth require all the nutrients in adequate amounts so the baby’s body can form correctly, and the mother’s can heal and return to non-pregnancy processes. People pursue plant-based diets because they incorrectly believe it has many benefits, but the truth is that it only funds corrupt public interest groups and puts young children at risk. It is very important for all new or planning-to-be parents to understand the undeniable association between mother’s diet and child’s health. Here are 15 problems that a vegan diet causes for women who either are or are planning to become pregnant:

- Getting enough zinc during pregnancy boosts the fetus’ immune system, deficiency of zinc can cause cleft palates or cleft lips

- Getting enough Omega-3 fatty acids (often supplied in the form of fish oil) while pregnant reduces the risk of pre-term pregnancy and pre-eclampsia while positively raising the birth weight; on the other hand, deficiency increases the mother’s risk of depressed thoughts
- If a woman gets pregnant while suffering from a vitamin B12 deficiency, there is an elevated risk for birth defects, preterm delivery, and the same deficiency in the newborn
- Pregnancy raises the risk of anemia (15-25% of pregnancies cause anemia), which is further elevated by a lack of heme iron
- Calcium deficiency decreases bone density in both the newborn and the mother; in women, this especially raises the risk of osteoporosis
- Getting enough of each recommended nutrient during pregnancy improves and expedites recover after labor
